What a Pre-K child works on

Pre-K is the year when the hand becomes steadier and words come tumbling out. Between 4 and 5, your child learns to hold their pencil better, draw loops and bridges, count small groups and hear the syllables in words.

None of this is learned sitting still for an hour. In Pre-K, progress comes in short bursts: five to ten minutes, two or three times a week, is enough. Our preschool activity sheets are designed for exactly that: one simple instruction per page, large tracing areas suited to a 4-year-old’s hand, and drawings the child wants to finish.

At this age, the child does not read yet, and this is perfectly normal: they recognise letters, identify sounds, guess the meaning of an image. Instructions should therefore be read by you, aloud. Your role is not to correct, but to name what they do: "you made a loop", "there are three of them". It is this vocabulary placed on the gesture that helps progress.

The Pre-K holiday workbook

A Pre-K holiday workbook is not extra schoolwork. It’s a short, happy moment that keeps hand and ear alert during the long breaks.

After several weeks without a pencil, a child in Pre-K mostly loses automatic gestures: their pencil grip loosens and strokes become hesitant again. Short pre-writing activities, offered when they feel like it, can help bring these gestures back. That’s the whole point of a Pre-K holiday workbook to print: you take out one or two sheets, your child does them at breakfast or after a nap, and the matter is settled.

Our principle is simple. You print what you want, when you want, without creating an account or leaving an email. If a sheet is much liked, print it again — at this age, repeating a mastered activity is a real pleasure, not a waste of time.

From Pre-K to Kindergarten: what lies ahead

Kindergarten is the pivotal year before CP. Here’s what changes, and what a year of Pre-K gently prepares.

In Kindergarten, your child will move from free drawing to guided writing: capital letters become solid, cursive writing begins, and the first name ends up written without a model. They will also work on sounds much more finely — no longer just syllables, but sounds inside words. In numbers, they will go up to 10 and beyond, and start decomposing small quantities.

None of this means getting ahead. What really helps a future Kindergarten pupil is arriving with a confident hand, a rich vocabulary and the habit of focusing on an instruction for five minutes. That is exactly what our Pre-K sheets work on.

4 tips for a smooth experience

What makes the difference at 4 years old is not the number of sheets, but how they are offered.

Stop before they get tired. A sheet abandoned at the right moment is better than three sheets finished in tears. If attention fades, put it away and offer it another day.

Set them up properly. Feet on the floor, sheet slightly tilted, free hand holding the page. Many hesitant strokes come from a bad position, not a learning difficulty.

Talk while they work. Name colours, quantities, the position of objects. This word bath is as valuable as the exercise itself.

Do not correct with a red pen. If they make a mistake, show them the correct gesture and redo the sheet another day. At this age, the main goal is to build the pleasure of doing.

How long should a 4-5 year old child work?

Five to ten minutes, no more. At this age, sustained attention is short and that's normal. It's better to do two or three worksheets per week with pleasure than a daily session endured. Always stop while it's still working.

My child holds their pencil awkwardly — is that a problem in Pre-K?

No, pencil grip often stabilises during Pre-K (ages 4-5). Offer short pencils, which naturally encourage pinching, and lots of hand activities: modelling clay, clothes pegs, stickers. Handwriting will come more easily afterwards. If doubts persist, talk to your child's teacher.

Should children learn to read in Pre-K?

No. In Pre-K, children recognise capital letters, hear syllables and pick out sounds — that’s already a lot. Learning to read starts in CP (age 6-7). Our worksheets follow the main stages of preschool and deliberately stop there.
