What are Kindergarten exercises for?

Kindergarten is the pivotal year: the last year of preschool, the one that prepares for CP (age 6-7). Everything happens on three fronts: the hand that writes, the ear that hears sounds, and numbers up to 10.

Between 5 and 6 years old, a child does not progress because more is demanded, but because they repeat short gestures often, without pressure. This is exactly what printable Kindergarten exercises allow: you take out a page, your child does it in five to ten minutes, and then the folder is closed.

Our pages are based on what is expected by the end of Kindergarten: a simple instruction and large tracing areas suited to a 5-year-old’s hand. They don’t replace school; they gently extend it. Pre-writing and tracing: the hand that gets ready to write

In Kindergarten, tracing becomes precise: you stay on the line, follow a direction and carry on without lifting the pencil. This will make writing much easier in CP.

Not everything goes through paper. When the printer is broken, or when spending the weekend at grandparents', interactive workbooks take over. How to support a 5-year-old child?

What makes the difference in Kindergarten is not the number of pages completed, but how they are presented.

Always read the instructions aloud. A child in Kindergarten does not decode yet. If they get stuck, it is almost never the exercise that is the problem, but the instruction they did not understand. Rephrase with your own words, show an example, then let them do it alone.

Stop before fatigue. Five to ten minutes is enough. One page abandoned at the right time is better than three pages finished in tears: put it away and offer it again another day.

Set them up properly. Feet on the floor, paper slightly tilted, free hand holding the page. Many hesitant strokes simply come from a bad position, even before thinking about a learning difficulty.

Do not correct with a red pen. Instead, name what they just did: "you made a nice round loop," "there are six of them." This vocabulary linked to the gesture helps progress as much as the exercise.

Frequently asked questions about Kindergarten

My child cannot read in Kindergarten, is that normal?

Yes, completely normal: reading is taught in CP (age 6-7). In Kindergarten, a child is expected to recognise letters, hear the syllables and sounds in a word, and write their first name in capital letters. Some can decode a few simple words before CP: that is a head start, not the norm. If they recognise letters and play with sounds, they are exactly where they should be.

How much time per day?

Five to ten minutes, no more. At 5 years old, sustained attention is short, and that’s normal. Two or three pages per week done with pleasure are better than a daily session endured. Always stop while it’s still working: that’s what makes them want to start again.

My child still holds their pencil poorly, what should I do?
