What are CE1 exercises for?

The year when everything solidifies: reading was learned in CP, now children read to understand — and discover the first multiplication tables.

Between 7 and 8 years old, a child progresses by small repeated touches, not by long sessions: ten minutes, one concept, then close the book.

In CE1, the child can decipher, but this reading still costs energy: as long as they assemble syllables, little remains for understanding the sentence. Our CE1 exercises to print aim therefore at two things: more fluent reading, and calculation automatisms that free the mind for problems. They are inspired by the end-of-CE1 expectations and gently extend school, without replacing it. The complete course is on the page gathering all our holiday workbooks.

The three domains of a CE1 workbook

Each activity, on paper or on screen, belongs to one of these three domains.

Domain 1 · Reading

Reading and understanding

We consolidate decoding: sounds, syllables, words recognised at a glance. The more automatic the reading, the more space the child has to understand.

  • Sounds and syllables, to read without stumbling
  • Read a sentence and say what it tells
  • Alphabetical order and opposites
Domain 2 · Writing

Writing and conjugating

The year of concrete grammar: identifying the verb, conjugating it in the present tense, agreeing in the plural, switching from masculine to feminine.

  • Find the verb, conjugate it in the present tense
  • The plural: one cat, cats — and the words that resist
  • Masculine and feminine; the months of the year
Domain 3 · Calculating

Calculating and discovering the multiplication tables

Numbers go up to 100 and multiplication makes its entrance, with the tables of 2, 3, 4 and 5.

  • Numbers up to 100, tens, comparing, even and odd
  • Additions, subtractions, complements, doubles and halves
  • The tables of 2, 3, 4 and 5
  • Time, money, measurements, problems

6 A4 pages: one page of French, one of maths, one of games, answers at the end. Free, no account or email required.

CE1 exercises to print in PDF

One file, six A4 pages, ready to print. No account, no email.

Our workbook brings together free CE1 exercises to print in PDF drawn from the key concepts of the year: conjugate "chanter" in the present tense for all six persons, make plural a cat, a horse, a cake, a nose, find the feminine of an actor and a lion, calculate 3 × 4, 5 × 6, 2 × 8 and 7 × 3, solve a problem, tell the time, then relax with a page of games. The answers are at the end, for you.

For printing: A4 format, 100% scale (avoid "fit to page"), and a pencil rather than a pen. It prints very well in black and white, as many times as you want.

To go further, our CE1 holiday workbook guide details what a 7-year-old child learns during the year.

And to review maths while having fun: our free CE1 magic colouring pages — one calculation per box, one hidden drawing per page.

All level materials are gathered on the CE1 exercises page to print: the PDF workbook, the colouring pages, and 30 corrected exercises.

CE1 maths exercises: multiplication tables

The novelty of the year: discovering the tables of 2, 3, 4 and 5 — not all ten at once.

A table is better learned in this order: counting by 2s, then by 5s, then by 3s and 4s. The child then sees that a table is just repeated addition; the results to memorise come afterwards. This approach avoids rote recitation, which collapses as soon as the question order changes.

The PDF workbook gives a first contact: four multiplications to calculate and a candy packet problem. The rest of the calculation is practised on screen, around 100: tens, comparing, even and odd, additions, subtractions, doubles and halves, complements — then time, money, measurements, shapes and problems.

For CE1 multiplication tables to print, each table also has its own on-screen workbook: 2, 3, 4, 5, each from 1 to 10, plus a workbook on the meaning of multiplication and one on mental calculation, gathered on the big CE1 workbook. Two minutes a day on a single table is better than half an hour on all four.

CE1 French exercises: plural, feminine, present tense

Three rules to establish this year, and a reading that gradually becomes more fluent.

Our CE1 French exercises to print follow a simple idea: one rule at a time, on familiar words. The plural first, with the -s that is written but not pronounced, then the words that resist: un cheval, des chevaux. The feminine then: an actor, an actress. The present tense finally, on a verb like « chanter », the six persons to complete one after the other to see the ending change.

At the same time, reading is maintained: sounds, syllables, a sentence that the child then explains in their own words — the real leap of CE1 (7-8 years old).

If your child is leaving CP (6-7 years old) and some basics remain fragile, going back does no harm: CP exercises to print review sounds and simple words, and this revision is often more effective than a CE1 exercise done with difficulty.

The 30 interactive CE1 workbooks, to do on screen

Self-correcting, free, in the browser: the child clicks, the screen responds immediately.

When the printer is broken, the interactive workbooks take over. The child clicks, immediately knows if it is correct, earns stars and leaves with their diploma. This immediate correction is precious at 7 years old.

The thirty workbooks cover the year. In French: sounds, syllables, alphabetical order, reading a sentence, opposites, the verb, the present tense, the plural, masculine and feminine, the months. In maths: additions, subtractions, complements, doubles and halves, mental calculation, comparing, tens, numbers up to 100, even and odd, sequences, the meaning of multiplication and the tables of 2, 3, 4 and 5. And finally time, money, measurements, shapes and problems.

Everything is on a single page: the big CE1 workbook. And for a quiet break, there is the Jungle workbook, “Léo’s Great Journey”, which you can flip through like a story.

How to support a 7-year-old child?

What matters in CE1 is not the number of pages done, but how they are offered.

Have them read aloud, briefly. Two or three sentences are enough. If they stumble on a word, give them a few seconds: it is in this silence that they learn to decode alone.

Short and regular rather than long and rare. Ten to fifteen minutes, a few times a week. One page abandoned at the right time is better than three pages finished in tears.

Separate content from form. If the reasoning is good but the calculation is wrong, say so: "you found the right operation."

One multiplication table at a time. Two minutes in the car, two minutes before dinner: this is how tables settle in. And if you want to read what awaits next, our CE2 guide tells it calmly, and the CE2 exercises to print are already ready.

Léo the lion and the Jungle world

Each class has its mascot at Kidibook. In CE1, it is Léo the lion, in the Jungle world.

Léo is not just decoration. He accompanies the child from one activity to another and celebrates each success. At 7 years old, an exercise carried by a character you love becomes an adventure, no longer just another chore after school.

And when an activity is finished, there is the reward: the Kidibook Passport, where your child meets Léo, collects hero stamps and prints their diploma. A concrete goal, at their level — and a good reason to ask for another page the next day.

Frequently asked questions about CE1

My child still reads slowly, is that serious?

No, this is very common in CE1 (7-8 years old): many children still decode word by word, using their finger to help. Fluency develops throughout the year, and often beyond. What helps: two or three sentences read aloud each day, easy texts for them, and a bit of patience before prompting a word. If reading remains very difficult, talk to their teacher.

Do children need to know all the multiplication tables in CE1?

No. In CE1 (7-8 years old), children discover the tables of 2, 3, 4, and 5; the others will come later. And “knowing” does not mean reciting quickly: the child must first understand that 4 × 3 means 4 + 4 + 4 before memorising the result.

How much time per day?

Ten to fifteen minutes, a few times a week. One page done with pleasure is better than a daily session endured. Stop while it’s still working: that’s what makes them want to start again.

Are CE1 exercises really free?

Yes, completely. The workbook in PDF and the 30 interactive workbooks are free: no account, no email required. You download, you print, your child does.
