Make your book report sheet
Read the sheet with your child: it helps them understand the book, it does not replace reading it. When we don’t know a book well enough, we tell you instead of making things up.
What is a book report sheet?
A book report sheet is a short document that keeps the essentials of a book: what the story is about, who the characters are, where and when it takes place, its themes, and what the reader thought of it. At school, it shows that a book has been understood and helps prepare a talk or a reading test. For children, it is also a way to keep track of everything they read.
The parts of a book report
- The book’s ID card: title, author, publisher, year and genre (novel, tale, picture book, play, non-fiction…).
- The setting: where and when the story happens.
- The characters: the hero, their friends and enemies, and the role of each one.
- The summary: the story in a few lines, in your own words.
- The themes: what the book is really about (friendship, courage, being different…).
- Vocabulary: the new words discovered while reading.
- A personal opinion: what you liked or didn’t like, and why.
How to write a book report, step by step
- Read with notes. A bookmark with the characters’ names and important pages is enough.
- Spot what matters. After each chapter, ask: what changed? Who did what?
- Fill in the ID card, then the setting and the characters.
- Write the summary: beginning, problem, adventures, ending.
- Give an opinion and back it up with a moment from the book.
Our ready-made sheet works as a model: your child checks they understood, then writes their own report in their own words.
What changes with age
- Age 5 to 7: the title, the main character, a drawing of a favourite scene and one sentence about it. An adult reads the sheet with the child.
- Age 7 to 9: a short summary, the list of characters, where the story happens.
- Age 9 to 11: a real summary, the setting, the themes and an argued opinion.
- Age 11 to 18: the genre, the narrator’s point of view, quotations and key passages.
A book report sheet, plus an exercise sheet
Every Kidibook book report comes with an exercise sheet and its answers: 8 to 10 comprehension questions, a true-or-false quiz, the key moments of the story to put in order, words from the book to match with their meaning, and a short writing task. The answers print on a separate page.
Mistakes to avoid
- Copying the back cover instead of summarising.
- Retelling every chapter in detail.
- Writing “I liked it” without saying why.
- Forgetting the author or the publisher.

Frequently asked questions
Is the book report sheet really free?
Yes. Each connection gets 10 free sheets, shared between book report sheets and revision sheets, with no email and no sign-up. The blank template is unlimited.
How do you write a book report?
Read the book while noting the characters and key moments, then fill in, in order: the book’s ID card, the setting, the characters, the summary, the themes, the vocabulary and your opinion.
What are the parts of a book report?
The book’s details (title, author, publisher, genre), the setting, the characters, the summary, the themes, the vocabulary and a personal opinion.
Which books does it work with?
Children’s books and the classics read from age 5 to 18. If a book is too recent or too little known, we tell you instead of making an approximate sheet, and no sheet is used up.
Can my child hand this sheet in to their teacher?
That is not the idea. The sheet helps check that they understood the book and helps them prepare their own report. The exercises and the opinion part are for your child to fill in.
What happens to the title I type?
The title, author and age are only used to prepare the sheet. We don’t ask for any personal data. Your IP address is only used to count your sheets: it is stored in a scrambled form, never in plain text.
